Detailed description of Shanty Creek, Summit Golf Course

Shanty Creek Resorts is a Resort, 72 hole golf facility located in Bellaire, Michigan. The facility has four distinct 18-hole golf courses including Arnold Palmer's The Legend Course, Tom Weiskopf's Cedar River Golf Course, the challenging Schuss Mountain Course, and the original Summit Golf Course.

The Summit Golf Course was the first of the four courses at Shanty Creek. The Summit Course first opened for play in 1965. The course was designed by William Diddel.

The course rolls gently across the hills of Antrim County. This is a  favorite among golfers who favor wide fairways and fast greens.

This full-length northern Michigan golf course features family-friendly and beginner-friendly “hack golf” including par 3 tees on every hole and big 15″ cups on every green (in addition to traditional cups). The PGA of America has recognized Shanty Creek for its adoption of “Hack Golf” and “Golf 2.0” efforts to introduce more beginners to the game.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,260 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,679 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par-5 that plays to 524 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 3, a par-3 that plays to 171 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 524 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 12, a 333 yard par-4.

This is the fifth (5) course we played at Shanty Creek and I'm glad we played it as a scramble. Being the first course built here in 1965, I'm sure they wanted to make it "Player Friendly" so mostly wide open is the common theme here. They do have scattered traps and well positioned trees that narrow up some landing areas. One thing I did notice from the previous write-up is that the Front/Back have now been switched from the original score card. The longest hole is now #15 a Par 5 at 524yds that is just long and narrow Hcp 1 fairway. The Blues play 6,276yds / 70.4 / 131 down to Reds at 4,757yds / 63.3 / 109 on this Par 35/36 rolling layout with five (5) tee box selections. One hole I remember is #5 a 467yd uphill Par 5 that had our 2nd shot 2' from the hole for a Eagle. The #11 Par 4 at 365yds has you playing to a 130yd 2nd shot to a elevated green with a grass gully to carry. We ended up shooting -10 as we had four (4) sidehill putts within 10' that we just couldn't get the right speed to drop it. The conditions here are not quite as nice as the other courses and no real breath taking views like the others. I would put this track as a $40-$50 course but nothing like the other four (4) courses we played.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area
